Severs disease is a condition that occurs in the growth plate at the back of the heel bone in children. This growth plate merges with the rest of the heel bone after the bone has stopped growing at around age 15. Severs disease is relatively comon in younger kids. The most common symptom of severs disease is pain on activity at the back of the heel and pain on squeezing the sides of the heel at the back. Some consider Severs disease to be something like a stress fracture that occurs in the cartilage. The treatment for Severs disease is usually to cut back on activity levels and use some sort of cushioning heel raise to relieve the strain on the back of the bone. Foot orthotics are also often helpful. Sometimes severs disease needs to be treated with a walking splint.
